Industry News MetalMatters, the UK-based metal packaging industry’s curbside recycling improvement program, reached over two million households across 31 local authorities in 2012, and significantly increased the metals capture rate in each campaign. The results, based on analysis of four MetalMatters campaigns that concluded in 2012, also show that the program has helped expand the range of metals collected curbside, with 13 of the partner local authorities expanding their recycling schemes to include aerosols, foil trays, household foil and metal caps and closures. German manufacturers of aluminum packaging recorded slight volume losses in the business year 2012. Aluminum packaging manufacturers produced a total of 320,025 tons of aluminum aerosol cans, foils and tubes in 2012, which is 4.6% less than the amount produced in the previous year (335,490 tons). “The reasons for this decline can be found in the general European economic crisis and the flagging export markets,” reported Christian Wellner, the Executive Director of the Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie e.V.(GDA), which is based in Düsseldorf, Germany. “After a rather restrained trend of demand in the last quarter of 2012, which could be traced back to the increased running down of stocks among customers, the number of orders received in the first quarter of 2013 has, however, significantly increased,” he added. “Although the figures recently recorded show an improvement, it is still extremely difficult to make a forecast for 2013. The fact that the economic climate remains unstable means that our industry is currently planning on a short-term basis,” Wellner concluded. The site will serve to inform the public as to the safe and positive use of aerosols, as well as providing timely and relative information addressing regulatory developments and industry concerns. According to NAA President, George Buckland, “The NAA’s aim is to develop the site as a useful resource creating a channel for the aerosol industry. It will act as an important communication vehicle, providing the most up to date information for our members as well as the general visitor.” Visit: http://www.nationalaerosol. com. (CSI), a risk retention group serving the specialty consumer products industry, announced it has increased to $1 million the insurance limits available under its site-specific CSI pollution coverage. “The increase in available protection continues CSI’s industry-leading efforts to respond to the unique risk management needs of specialty chemical manufacturers and distributors,” said Chris Cathcart, President & CEO, Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) and President of CSI. “While all of our participating insureds maintain a strong focus on safety and operate with sound environmental risk management practices, the insurance can provide vital financial protection in the event of an incident.” The increased available pollution liability coverage is the latest of a series of coverage enhancements made by CSI to its insurance program during the past several months; it follows the announcement of expanded product recall protection with limits increased to $250,000 from $100,000. The higher available pollution coverage limits provide optional added protection under CSI’s general liability insurance policy, which also offers such important coverage enhancements as blanket additional insured coverage where required by vendors, blanket waiver of subrogation, and reimbursement for product withdrawal expenses, as well as protection from claims tied to certified acts of terrorism.
