Daniel Daggett, Director of Product Stewardship & Sustainability, Sealed Air Corp., said his company has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 48% in recent years and has a longstanding relationship with the World Wildlife Fund through its Diversey business. Daggett noted that sustainability plays such a big role at Sealed Air that CEO Jerome Peribere recently noted, “If I could rename our company, I would call it ‘The Sustainability Company.’” Key takeaways from the meeting include: • Sustainability, Product Stewardship and Product Care are no longer a question of “if”, but “how.” • To get management’s support and integrate sustainability into currently approved/in-place initiatives such as safety. • The costs associated with sustainability are real, but efforts are scalable and well worth the investment. Aerosol Products and Industrial & Automotive Products Divisions Program Challenges and opportunities face the supply chain when it comes to meeting aerosol and automotive products regulatory requirements and products distribution. The two divisions sponsored a joint program, “Supply Chain Partnering,” to address these issues. Peggy Fowler and Drew Sadler, Wal-Mart; Mike Olsen, Sears/K-Mart; and Paul Montgomery and Joan McGuffey, The WERCS, offered an overview of how retailers achieve compliance with volatile organic compound (VOC) rules and other topics. According to Fowler, the retailer’s role in the development of solutions is to support regulatory associations while protecting brand secrets. Additionally, the current Wal-Mart VOC program is “a lot of work,” so what does Wal-Mart need from suppliers? Supply chain education, reliable data management controls and a supplier/retailer council, said Fowler. Paul Montgomery reminded aerosol suppliers to make sure their systems mesh with the 30 retailers that are currently working within the WERCS system. WERCS Extend is a new program that provides easy access to data in order to make improvements to retailers systems. Joan McGuffey discussed development of the VOC module. If current VOC regulatory information changes, The WERCS will want to require an entirely new safety study. Micah Thompson, Advance Auto Parts, provided insights about challenges and opportunities in the automotive products retail distribution system, including meeting RCRA requirements. Pat Gieske, Director of Regulatory Affairs, Valspar Corp., discussed the realities of implementing the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard. Neither the use of OSHA HazCom pictograms nor the use of HazCom hazard test or signal words on products would necessarily constitute a misbranding under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA). The FHSA does not prohibit the use of pictograms, nor would it prohibit the use of the OSHA HazCom 2012 prescribed hazard text or signal words, unless the pictograms or Gieske text were contradictory to the FHSA cautionary statements. OSHA HazCom pictograms and/or hazard text should be separated from the cautionary statements required under the FHSA and should not interfere with the prominence or conspicuity of the FHSA-required cautionary labeling. ACE partners with Major League Baseball, Wal-Mart The Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE) reported progress made in partnering on a program with Wal- Mart, as well as solidifying plans for working with Major League Baseball on the All-Star Game. Additionally, ACE will launch partnerships with the Consumer Aerosol Products Council (CAPCO) and CSPA’s Cleaning Products and Antimicrobial Divisions this fall. The 2013 Champions of ACE were also awarded at the Chicago meeting. They are Mark Cohen, Director of Labeling, NCH Corp.; Jeff Williams, 8-year ACE Board member; and Hal Ambuter, Director, Regulatory & Government Affairs, Reckitt Benckiser. Emerging Retail Initiatives Closing out the general sessions was a Thursday afternoon marathon on “Emerging Retail Initiatives” that included panelists from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the State of California, retail organizations and trade groups. Hundreds of attendees participated in lively discussions around the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), hazardous waste issues facing retailers and on ingredient communication initiatives. This session raised as many questions as it answered, and the stage was set for ongoing discussions among these stakeholder groups in the coming months.
