SPRAY Technology & Marketing Commentary I’m often asked what the weirdest aerosol product I ever saw is. Spray pancakes? Forget it. Aerosol eggs for camping trips? Please. No one ever expects my true reply, which is anti-cannibalism spray for pigs. I live and work in a suburban/urban area where we experience animals by visiting the zoo or encountering them as they invade the suburbs, seeking refuge as their habitats are razed in order to build more suburbs. We find nonpets a little scary. The first time I saw a wild turkey, my neighbor screamed, “Don’t make eye contact!” and ran inside. The first time I saw a fox, I thought it was a some kind of large, prehistoric cat running across the road and instinctively called 511NJ (New Jersey’s traffic hotline) rather than Animal Control, because I was in my car after all and who in New Jersey knows the number for Animal Control off the top of their head anyway? Ignorant as I am about wildlife and barnyard animals, I’m still very aware of the importance of the good health of livestock. While pig spray may seem funny to us city slickers, it’s of great importance to the livelihood of many. Diseases affecting livestock can have a devastating impact on animal productivity and production, on trade in live animals, meat and other animal products, on human health and, consequently, on overall economic development. Recently, CID Lines out of Belgium developed an aerosol spray called Kenofix, which provides disinfection, forms a protective barrier and has an anti-cannibalism effect. This is unique because previously, these three functions could only be found in three separate sprays. According to the company, there are many different types of aerosol sprays on today’s pig farms, so when CID Lines developed Kenofix in an aerosol, it had to be more than “just another spray” on the market. Offering “a uniform spray from the first push to the last,” Kenofix can be used for disinfecting the skin, the umbilical cord, after castration, tail cutting and caesarean section and on hooves. The press materials also mentioned the spray is helpful after “dehorning”—I wasn’t sure what kind of horned pigs they have in Belgium, but further research indicated that the product can indeed be used on a multitude of species. Yet again, we have an example of one more creative and innovative product that comes in an aerosol. There are so many different types of spray products; I never cease to wonder at what will come on the market next. The diversity is truly inspiring. 6 SPRAY July 2014 Cynthia Hundley Publisher chundley@spraytm.com Ava Caridad Editorial Director acaridad@spraytm.com Greg Dool Assistant Editor gdool@spraytm.com Montfort A.
