More info: info@ rddonline.com; www. rddonline.com. 30 Spray January 2014 U.S. retailer Target is creating a new ranking system that evaluates personal care and cleaning products based on ingredient safety and disclosure of environmental effects, as well as asking the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to collaborate with it in developing a standard for cosmetic safety next year. Working with GoodGuide, Target will give products a score of zero to 100 based on five criteria. Ingredient safety and disclosure will account for 70% of the score, with ingredients crossreferenced against health hazard databases created by scientific authoritative and regulatory bodies. Transparency will be graded on full ingredient disclosure, including generic ingredients labeled “fragrances,” and rankings will ultimately influence which products the retailer sells. Ball Corp. announced that it will cease production at the company’s Danville, IL steel aerosol packaging manufacturing plant during the second half of 2014. Ball will redeploy the plant’s assets to other existing company facilities and will continue to supply the plant’s customers. The Danville plant produces three-piece welded aerosol cans and ends for household products customers. Ball will provide the plant’s 47 employees with outplacement services, severance pay and the opportunity to apply for open positions within the company. Ball will record an after-tax charge of approximately $7 million for this closure, the majority of which will be recorded during the fourth quarter of 2013.   CCL Industries Inc. announced its plans to permanently close its Canadian aerosol manufacturing operation, commencing in the first half of 2014 and completing no later than mid-2015. Geoffrey Martin, President & CEO of CCL, indicated that the Penetanguishene, ONT plant—which employed 170 people—had been unprofitable since 2009 and posted sizable losses during the economic crisis years. Although results improved in 2012 and 2013, the operation continued to post losses. CCL Container will consolidate the sales volume from the Canadian plant into its existing operations in the U.S. and Mexico, investing approximately $25 million in required capacity and infrastructure additions at its Hermitage, PA and Guanajuato, Mexico sites over 2014 and 2015. This includes the previously announced new aerosol production line planned for installation in mid-2014.
