it resists UV light. It is available in a 16oz aerosol package and is suited for use in utility, marine, refinery, water treatment, chemical processing, pulp and paper, food manufacturing, food processing and general maintenance and repair. Plasti Dip from Plasti Dip International is a multi-purpose, air dry, specialty rubber coating. It can be easily applied by spraying, dipping or brushing. It is suitable for a broad array of doit yourself projects around the home, garage/ auto and garden. It protects coated items against moisture, acids, abrasion, corrosion, and skidding/ slipping, and provides a comfortable, controlled grip. Plasti Dip remains flexible and stretchy over time, and will not crack or become brittle in extreme weather conditions. It has been tested and proven in temperatures from -30°F to 200°F. The cans are manufactured by DS Containers. A fresh coat... All paints are coatings, but then again, not all coatings are paints. For example, new Homax Pro Grade Popcorn Ceiling Texture makes the tough task of popcorn ceiling repair easier and less time-consuming for professional contractors, and delivers an “invisible repair” for residential and commercial popcorn ceiling repair projects. The advanced formula replicates commercial popcorn texture aggregates and allows contractors to achieve a professional match up to four times faster than with traditional methods. The product has a patented ergonomic grip designed for comfort and controlled application. After use, the integrated safety lock allows users to store and reuse any leftover texture from job-to-job. It is available in 14oz aerosol cans supplied by Crown Holding’s Aerosol Division and BWAY. ZYP Coatings, Inc. unveiled its new Boron Nitride Aerosol Lubricoat-NF, a nonflammable aerosol spray using the Necosolv non-flammable solvent system and the new “Green” Solstice HFO-1234-ze propellant from Honeywell. Thus, according to Cres Holcombe, Marketing Manager/Development-Engineer of ZYP Coatings, the useful properties of Boron Nitride (BN) can be achieved with a nonflammable, fast-drying solventbased aerosol can. Coatings are applied at room temperature on most any substrate and dried, after which they can be used from cryogenic temperatures up to 1,000°C in air, 1,400°C in vacuum and 1,800°C in inert/nitrogen atmospheres. Boron Nitride is chemically inert—nonreactive/nonwetting with most molten metals, glasses and slags—providing non-stick, release and barrier-layers to reactive materials. Thin, uniform layers can be applied to most any substrate. The product is white, thereby it helps reduce friction, and suitable for applications where flammable coatings are not desired. According to Holcombe, the specialty uses of the product are almost unlimited for researchers, engineers, scientists, designers, chemists and maintenance personnel in most every field. Boron Nitride Aerosol Lubricoat-NF is filled by I-K-I Manufacturing Co., Inc. The future demand for paint… U.S. demand for paint and coatings, including but not restricted to spray paint, is forecast to rise 4.2% annually, valued at $30.6 billion, according to market research firm The Freedonia Group’s new study, Paint & Coatings. In particular, advances will be driven by a strong rebound in construction activity, which will propel demand for architectural paint and for metal building component coatings.  The architectural market is the leading outlet for paints and coatings is predicted to grow at an above average pace through the forecast period. The residential segment will offer the best opportunities for growth, as the country recovers from the housing crisis that greatly reduced demand for residential architectural paint, particularly for new housing. Demand for interior paint will grow faster than demand for exterior paint. Increasing environmental awareness and greater consumer concern regarding indoor air quality will spur demand for low- or no-volatile organic compound (VOC) products, especially those that are marketed as having low odor or being odor-free. Paints and coatings demand in manufacturing markets is expected to expand at a healthy pace through 2017.  The metal building components segment is projected to achieve particularly rapid gains. Furniture coatings will also account for a sizable share of new demand between 2012 and 2017, benefiting from rapid gains in new housing completions, which will boost demand for home furnishings. Maintenance and specialty coatings will remain the smallest market through 2017.  Demand in the industrial maintenance sector will be supported by expanding nonresidential improvement and repair activity, while growth in the marine coatings segment will stem from increased output of marine equipment and the need to maintain large tankers, ships, and cruise liners, offshore drilling rigs and platforms.  Spray Aerosol Coating Regulations for 2014 The California Air Resources Board (CARB) completed its comprehensive set of amendments in 2013. The General Coating Maximum Incremental Reactivity (MIR) limits were reduced significantly and become effective in 2017, which means there is time to reformulate. Aerosol Coatings are regulated by Reactivity, not massbased limits, and Reactivity is a better way to regulate VOC reduction. Any reduction in Reactivity is also a reduction in smog production. CARB also added some new categories, which anyone making Aerosol Coatings should review called Specialty Category (A). In addition, CARB capped the other specialty category limits at the highest MIR values that were reported in the last survey. Did you report your products in the last survey? If not make sure you review the limits. Some small manufacturers of specialty coatings may not have reported, thus their coatings may not be compliant. These categories are called Specialty Coatings (B) and have effective MIR limits as of 1/1/2015. This is less than five months away. The time to review your products for compliance is now.   The next big issue is CARB and its proposed survey. CARB wanted to include Aerosol Coatings in its comprehensive survey, which would have meant full formula disclosure. CARB’s latest position, as a result of industry opposition, was that only sales data for 2013, 2014 and 2015 is needed.  However, new products would need to report formulation data. Let’s wait and see how this all works out. — Doug Raymond, Raymond Regulatory Resources Continued from p. 15 30 Spray August 2014
