Paint the Town 12 Spray August 2014 By Ava Caridad, Editorial direc tor Coatings and paints continue a global rebound. According to the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA), 420,535,346 aerosol paints and varnishes were filled in the U.S. in 2013, primarily packaged in steel containers (only 5,707 were reported as packaged in aluminum cans). This includes 370,454,137 “Paints, Primers & Varnishes” and 18,053,285 “Other related products,” such as paint strippers, graffiti remover, fake snow and other decorative products. Across the pond, 14.4 million cans of aerosol paints and lacquers were produced in the UK in 2013, according to the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA). Almost 41 million aerosol coatings and finishes were produced in Japan in 2013, which is nearly a 3% jump. South Africans consumed 9.6 million aerosol paints in 2013, including 1.8 million imports. Three percent of Brazil’s 946.2 million aerosols consumed in 2013 consisted of spray paint, while Germany produced 77 million paints and varnishes last year and Argentina 10.6 million. According to market research firm Euromonitor International, the U.S. market value for paints and varnishes (including but not restricted to aerosols) in 2012 increased by 4%. Industrial consumers accounted for the bulk of sales, with the construction industry leading. The second-largest consumer was public administration and defense with a market share of 8% in 2012, a 12% increase in spending since 2006. Motor vehicle, trailer and semi-trailer manufacturers accounted for 8% of demand and decreased spending on paints and varnishes by 4%. Households accounted for 6% of the market in 2012. In 2012, only 6% of paints and varnishes offered on the U.S. market were imported. Canada and Germany remain the leading trade partners, comprising 19% and 17% of all imports, respectively, in 2012. Exports amounted to 12% of local product output in 2012 and Canada remains the primary export market for U.S. paints and varnishes, purchasing 30% of all exports. China emerged as the second largest export partner for the U.S. in 2012, accounting for 17% of total exports, up from 4% in 2006, according to Euromonitor International. According to a study by consulting firm Kusumgar, Nerlfi & Growney, global consumption of coatings was 80 billion pounds in 2013, valued at $120 billion. The industry has recovered from the 2008-2009 global recession and a 5% average annual rate of growth is forecast through 2018. This modest rate of advance is being propelled largely by strong growth in the emerging economies of the Asia- Pacific region, particularly China and India, where consumption has surged by approximately 50% since 2008. The Asia-Pacific region is the leading coating consumer with 45% of the volume and 40% of the value in 2013. Growth is placed at 8% per year and is projected to rise to 51% of the pounds and 46% of the dollars in 2018.  Europe is the second largest coating outlet with 24% of the volume and 28% of the value in 2013. North America took 17% of the global poundage and 21% of the dollars. South and Central American coating usage in 2013 represented 8% of the total coating poundage and 6% of global value. Growth is expected to be 5%
