The first breakthrough for BOV products on the U.S. market was in 2005, when Coppertone Continuous Spray became the first sun care product line ever sold in BOV packaging. It used CCL’s bag-on-valve system, called the Advanced Barrier System. Now, sun care products in BOVs are common, as well as BOV self-tanning sprays. Edible oils spoil quickly when they come in contact with light and air, but a BOV system helps eliminate that challenge completely. With new spray actuator technologies, the oil can be dispensed with or without additives. Edible oil sprays may be the biggest current trend in the BOV industry. Oxygen sensitive actives such as probiotics and omega-3 oils are also suitable for packaging in BOV systems, even if the commercial products have yet to reach the consumer market. Current Product Development Some ongoing developments of BOV technology include valves wherein two different mediums may be filled separately from one another into a three-chamber system. Mixing occurs while spraying or by the user after application. Another new feature under development in the pharmaceutical industry is metering dosage BOV, where dosages such as 0.5mL or 1mL help guarantee a certain number of uses for the end consumer, as well as uniform product quality from the first dosage to the last. One company with an interesting approach is GreenSpense in Israel, which proposes to eliminate propellant gases altogether. They have developed a sleeve that is mounted around the bag and stem creating an initial pressure of six to seven bars directed toward the pouch and its content. Hence, the container can be made of any material, even cardboard. There are of advantages of handling, transportation and storage as well, since the product will not be classified as an aerosol. In the near future, we can expect new ways to manufacture BOV with faster manufacturing, laminate developments for more compatibility and a decrease in the number of laminate layers, among other developments.
