Editor Ava Caridad, Editor That is the question. Bag-on-Valve (BOV) packaging systems, while not new, are gaining in use and appeal in consumer categories that use a continuous spray, such as personal care and food products. But what is a BOV? And what is the difference between a BOV and a “traditional” aerosol? We’re glad you asked. This issue of Spray features not one, but two elucidating articles concerning BOVs, and you don’t have to be a scientist or packaging engineer to understand them. Written for lay-people, Fun with BOVs by Kevin Verville of Summit Packaging Systems explains the A–Zs of BOVs. How does the bag stay attached to the valve? How is it filled? What kind of propellants can be used? The answers to these and a multitude of other questions can be found on Page 26. Elsewhere in the issue, Technical Editor Montfort Johnsen explains the difference between different types of labeling for BOVs and traditional aerosols in The Battle of Weight vs. Volume. Don’t be fooled by the title, there are no hostilities involved, merely a look at what is the difference between net weight, fluid ounces and net content when labeling the various types of continuous sprays. How does it affect the marketer, the filler and the consumer? What are the regulatory issues at hand? Read Monty’s article on Page 20 for an understanding of these issues, as well as Doug Raymond’s column, Regulatory Issues, beginning on Page 8, to get a better understanding of this topic. New website! In case you missed the announcement last month, Spray Technology has a new website —www.spraytm.com. Also note our new email addresses at right. As always, we hope you enjoy this issue,
